Michael Porter is a business professor whose expertise is in corporate strategy. He argues that businesses should step up and address social problems rather than simply leave it to the not for profit groups and philanthropists. The issue is that community organisations can’t make “wide scale” progress because they don’t have enough revenue. What do you think of the talk?

Hi rurounisld. I support broadening social policy and government support for community issues, so disagree with Porter’s main argument. I don’t think it’s socially responsible to let corporations handle public good – that’s the domain of government. At the same time, I do think that corporations need to redistribute their wealth. It is possible to do this better. Other countries, such as Scandinavian nations, use taxes and stronger policy control of the private sector to get businesses to reinvest their profits into social welfare and social infrastructure.

Social Science Insights And scandanavia has a shit economy becase of it. social issues are the realm of the government, but socialism isn’t the answer. Socialism fundamentally exacerbates the social issue whether it be poverty or healthcare.

firexgodx980 Data show that Scandinavian nations have stronger economies today than they did in 2006 (http://goo.gl/PYZEV8 and http://stats.oecd.org/index.aspx?queryid=558). These economies rate highly amongst OECD nations in terms of GDP, social welfare and human rights (http://goo.gl/8HWMMm). They rate highest in terms of human development and life satisfaction in international comparisons (http://goo.gl/3U9sJl).
