Welcome back to our renewed series Social Science Quote of the Month. Today’s quote is from Frantz Fanon (20 July 1925 – 6 December 1961), a psychiatrist and political theorist.

Born in Martinique, a Caribbean island in the Antilles (French West Indies), he once fought against the Nazis with the French military. Years later, as a psychiatrist practising in Algeria, he would go on to theorise anti-colonialism, and turn his hospital into a hideout for anti-French fighters.

This quote is from Fanon’s perennially relevant book, The Wretched of the Earth.

“Privileges multiply and corruption triumphs…Today the vultures are too numerous and too voracious in proportion to the lean spoils of the national wealth. The party, a true instrument of power in the hands of the bourgeoisie, reinforces the machine, and ensures that the people are hemmed in and immobilised.”
