Here’s one account of how Social Science has helped Jaya Gajparia manage the daily racism she has experienced growing up in the UK. She says that sociology has provided her a range of tools to have a dialogue with others about discrimination. Social science also helps her understand how racism manifests not just in different facets of her own life, but to also put these incidents into a broader context.
For example, comparing her encounters to those of people in other socieities. Social science also helps her questioning where knowledge comes from, what the media say, why social policies are the way they are, and so on. Jaya works in the not for profit sector helping disabled people find meaningful work.
