This is a nice, brief analysis of the ‘Pepper Spray Cop Meme’. The video gives a quick run down of the development of this meme and it poses some interesting questions. Has the use of satire regarding this controversial act of policing lessened the social significance of what happened during this Occupy protest? This video also briefly touches on the idea of ‘citizen reporting’ via social media, which I’m very interested about.
As an aside, I always find it amusing when social scientists feel the need to dress in a white lab coats to look like a ‘scientist’! Even though they do it here as a bit of a joke, this still stands as a mild though nevertheless notable example of the social construction of authority.
