‘Race at Work Within Social Policy,’ has been published in the book, Critical Racial and Decolonial Literacies: Breaking the Silence, edited by Dr Debbie Bargallie and Dr Nilmini Fernando. This book chapter demonstrates how inadequate racial literacy impacts social policy documentation, including policies attempting to implement anti-racism principles.

New Project on COVID-19

It’s been awhile. I’ve been on medical leave, just focusing on my health and wellbeing. I’ve been mostly resting. Slowly, at my own pace, I have also been tinkering away at some personal projects. Something I started before I went on leave is a collaboration with a colleage on the sociology of race.

Roma

Roma is a beautiful film that covers issues of gender, race, class and violence in Mexico. Dedicated to, and based on, writer/ director Alfonso Cuarón’s childhood nanny and housekeeper “Libo” (Liboria Rodríguez), the film follows Cleo (the sublime Yalitza Aparicio), a young Mixtec woman employed by an affulent Mexican family. She has lived with them since the children’s birth, herself perhaps still in her 20s. She is beloved by the children, but is still treated like a servant.

How to Promote Gender Equality in Your Workplace

A forthcoming international survey of 240,000 workers by Barbara Annis shows that women feel professional exclusion in their workplaces, while men remain unaware that there’s a problem. Men resort to expressing old fashioned chivalry like opening doors and offering to pay for lunch, thinking this makes women feel more comfortable and appreciated. In fact, it is the way that men exclude women from promotional opportunities, meetings, and mentorship that is a problem for women.
