A three-year study of 400 homeless youth in Australia finds that 39% had experienced or witnessed domestic abuse prior to leaving home. A further 53% had been diagnosed with a mental illness. Homeless youth require better services and support networks to address the psychological impact of homelessness. Policy needs to be focused on prevention and intervention in early childhood, particularly where domestic violence is concerned.
